Mental Healthcare for Women Veterans
For those who do not know, the PTI was started by a veteran for the purpose of serving veterans in the Baton Rouge area and its surrounding communities. We found that our “formula” –treating people right and staying up to date on best methods and practices– was so successful, we decided that we wanted to be a resource for everyone in the Baton Rouge area. (We’ve now expanded into an additional office in Covington as well).
Today, we want to remember our roots as an organization that started out serving veterans and those still serving.
Statistics For Mental Health and Women Veterans
Currently, there are 2.2 million women veterans (about 10% of the total population of veterans). Women represent about 15% of active duty military and 18% of the National Guard and Reservists. It’s projected that in the coming years, women serving in the military will continue to grow at an even faster rate than in the past. About 20% of the women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have been diagnosed with PTSD.
Statistically, about 20% of women report having experienced sexual abuse while in the military. Both military sexual trauma (MST) and intimate partner violence (IVP) can be linked to an increased risk factor for PTSD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
Although positive changes are happening, service-women typically have less social and professional support than men, which increases the risk of women developing long-term PTSD. Mental health issues, PTSD, and readjustment difficulties make up three of the top four medical conditions which women seek help for through the VA administration. We’re glad to have a positive relationship with our local VA in Baton Rouge and am proud of all of our veterans and service-members!
If you’re a veteran we’re happy to serve you and we’re here to make sure you get the best treatment possible. We’re here to provide the best treatment and the most individualized treatment possible. We do that by putting our patients at the center of the process on not on the sidelines as they’re run through the system. Please give us a call today, whether you’re a veteran or not, if you’re experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD or any other mental illness.
